Foundations of Leadership

The courses for people want to be leaders or who've just been made a leader.

Most people don't get promoted into leadership because they asked for a leadership course. They get promoted because they were good at their job. Then, almost overnight, they're managing the people they used to sit next to, and expected to know things nobody ever showed them.

Foundations of Leadership is a nine-part program built for exactly that moment. It gives new and emerging leaders the grounding most companies assume they'll pick up on the way, from what leadership actually is, through to the judgment, communication, and self-awareness it takes to hold the role well.

Every organization has them: the newly promoted team lead who's brilliant technically and unsure everywhere else. The high performer given a title but no framework for what to do with it. The manager who defaults to either total control or total hands-off, because no one showed them a third option.

Left alone, this gap shows up as inconsistent leadership across teams, new managers who either overreach or disappear, and a leadership bench that looks fine on the org chart but isn't actually ready. Foundations of Leadership closes that gap early, before habits harden and before it costs you a good person in a role they were never set up to succeed in.

What changes for your people

By the end of the program, participants can:

  • Tell the difference between managing and leading, and know which one a given moment actually calls for
  • Take ownership of the responsibilities that come with leadership, even without formal authority behind them
  • Communicate in a way that actually lands, and navigate the harder conversations leadership requires
  • Recognize their own default patterns under pressure, and where those patterns come from
  • Lead across difference, adapt through change, and make sound decisions under ambiguity
  • Coach and support the people around them, rather than just directing them
  • Connect their day-to-day decisions to the business and its strategy, not just their own team

This isn't about inspiration. It's about creating a working foundation they can apply the week after each course.

Inside the program

Nine mini-courses, each self-contained and built to a consistent format — core teaching, common misconceptions addressed directly, real-world scenarios, and reflection prompts that turn insight into practice.

1. Foundations of Leadership What leadership actually is (and isn't), leadership vs. management, the responsibilities the role carries, influence without formal authority, and building a personal leadership philosophy.

2. Self-Awareness in Leadership The gap between how a leader sees themselves and how their team experiences them, default patterns under pressure, where those patterns were formed, and building an ongoing practice of self-observation.

3. Communication in Leadership Why communication is a leadership skill and not a soft one, clear messaging, active listening, difficult conversations, presence, and giving and receiving feedback.

4. Diversity Awareness Leading across difference, recognizing bias, building genuinely inclusive teams, and adapting leadership style to the people actually in the room rather than a single default approach.

5. Change and Personal Adaptation How leaders stay steady and effective through organizational change, and how they help their teams do the same instead of just absorbing the disruption themselves.

6. Decision Making and Problem Solving Structured approaches to decisions under pressure or ambiguity, and the common traps — from overconfidence to analysis paralysis, that derail good judgment.

7. Coaching and Support Moving from directing to developing, how to coach a team member through a problem rather than solving it for them, and when each approach is actually the right call.

8. Business Acumen Understanding the commercial and operational context leadership decisions sit inside, so leaders can connect their choices to the wider business rather than just their own patch of it.

9. Strategy and Understanding Goals Translating organizational strategy into team-level goals, and helping people see how their day-to-day work actually connects to it.

Who it's for

This program comes out of 20+ years of coaching and organizational development experience and 30+ years in HR and OD. The content reflects patterns seen repeatedly in real teams, not a generic leadership curriculum adapted for the occasion.

  • Newly promoted managers and team leads
  • High-potential employees being prepared for their first leadership role
  • Anyone leading projects, teams, or peers without a formal management title
  • Organizations building a consistent leadership baseline across departments, rather than leaving it to chance

Pricing

Foundations of Leadership is priced by cohort size, so a 15-person team and a 150-person rollout aren't paying the same rate for a fundamentally different scale of delivery. Get in touch and we'll put together a quote based on your group size and preferred delivery format.
